One API suite from integration to reconciliation

TradeStation’s institutional API capabilities span the full trade lifecycle, from pre-trade analytics and order origination through execution, allocation, settlement, and reconciliation. The unified suite supports FIX 4.4, REST, and HTTP protocols under a single credential framework, enabling firms to connect once and access equities, options, and futures without maintaining separate integrations per asset class.

FIX API

The Financial Information eXchange (FIX) protocol is the messaging standard the trading industry uses for electronic order routing and execution. A FIX API gives a firm a direct, persistent session connection to a broker or venue instead of routing through a web platform, which can reduce latency compared to web-based access. TradeStation's FIX API provides that session-based connectivity for institutional firms, with full support for a wide range of advanced order types: contingency logic runs natively inside the FIX session, so complex multi-leg strategies execute without external orchestration.

REST API

The REST API provides HTTP-based access to order management, account administration, market data, margin and risk checks, allocations, and reporting across equities, options, and futures. Single-key authentication simplifies credential management while role-based permissions and modular endpoints let firms scope access to exactly the functions each team or application requires. The REST API is compatible with major programming languages and integrates with OMS/EMS platforms used by institutional clients.

TradeStation HTTP Streaming.png

HTTP streaming

TradeStation's HTTP streaming endpoints deliver continuous market data and execution updates over a single, long-lived HTTP connection. A client sends one request and the server streams JSON responses to the application as new data arrives. Institutional firms use these streaming endpoints for live price feeds, order status notifications, position updates, and risk monitoring, which removes the need to repeatedly poll for changes and shortens the gap between a market event and the system's response.

Integrate with confidence

Enterprise-grade API security and governance
Every API session runs on the same security framework that protects TradeStation's self-clearing infrastructure, including OAuth2/JWT authentication, encrypted transport, and full audit logging. Role-based permissions let firms control which users, applications, and services reach specific endpoints, from order entry and market data to account administration and reporting.
Developer tools, sandbox, and onboarding support
Self-service sandbox environments mirror production behavior, giving fintech & developer teams a place to test integrations, simulate trades, validate automation, and certify connectivity across asset classes before going live. Interactive documentation, code samples, and certification kits support the process, and TradeStation engineers provide direct assistance with integration design, endpoint mapping, deployment, and troubleshooting.

FAQ: Institutional API capabilities
What API protocols does TradeStation support for institutional trading?
+

TradeStation offers FIX, REST, and HTTP connectivity. FIX gives a firm a direct, persistent session connection to a broker or venue instead of routing through a web platform. REST provides multi-asset order management, account services, and reporting. HTTP delivers real-time streaming market data and execution updates. All protocols operate under a unified credential and security framework.

Is there a cost for institutional API access?
+

There is no separate subscription or licensing fee for API access itself. Institutional clients access the API through a funded TradeStation account, and the API key is provided at no additional charge. Standard commissions and any applicable real-time market data fees apply based on the markets you trade and your usage rather than the API connection. To review access requirements and discuss an arrangement suited to your firm, contact our Institutional Solutions team.

How does TradeStation secure API connections?
+

API interactions are secured with OAuth2/JWT authentication, role-based access controls, encrypted data transport, IP whitelisting, and continuous activity monitoring with full audit logging. Cybersecurity controls follow NIST frameworks.

Can I test integrations before going live?
+

Yes. Self-service sandbox environments mirror production behavior, allowing development teams to simulate trades, test automations, and validate workflows across all asset classes.

How long does API onboarding take?
+

Typical implementations move from initial integration to production in a matter of weeks, depending on scope and complexity. TradeStation provides dedicated engineering support, documentation, and sandbox access to accelerate the process.

Does TradeStation’s API integrate with third-party OMS/EMS platforms?
+

Yes. Pre-built adapters and plug-ins provide connectivity to third-party OMS/EMS, risk, compliance, analytics, and reporting platforms. Third-party partners already connect through TradeStation’s API infrastructure.
